Highlights

A Paddler’s Trip

Baja kayaking at its best. Circumnavigate the crown jewel of the Loreto Bay National Park — Isla Carmen. Rugged red-hued peaks studded with towering cardon cacti provide the backdrop for the 60 miles of this 9 paddling day classic Baja kayaking trip. Carmen is the largest island in the Park; the coastline has a remarkable range of geology and terrain, from small, pebbled coves to broad white-sand beaches. Arroyos hikes provide access to the interior of the island where you’ll encounter desert iguanas and big-horned sheep. The waters around Isla Carmen teem with life and the snorkeling on this trip is exceptional. Take the time to explore this hidden corner of Baja and slip into the relaxing rhythm of early mornings, active sundrenched days and star filled nights.

Day 1

Loreto to Isla Carmen

The group meets at breakfast before boarding the van for the short drive south to our launch point near Puerto Escondido. As we near our destination, the peaks and hanging valleys of the Sierra Giganta tower above the coast road. South of Puerto Escondido the mountains plunge straight into the sea and the highway turns inland. A comprehensive sea kayak instructional session is presented before we set off to paddle to our first campsite. In the early evening you’ll enjoy your first beach “Happy Hour” with margaritas and botanas (snacks) followed by a gourmet dinner as the sun sets over the peaks of the Sierra Giganta.
Overnight: Camping
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Day 2-8

Carmen – the Big Island

With the backdrop of the russet colored peaks of Isla Carmen days begin with magnificent sunrises and the calls of wintering song birds from the bushes behind the beach and finish with pleasantly cool evenings. Each day you’ll break camp and paddle north along a dramatic section coastline of the islands stopping along the way to snorkel in some of the many coves. As you round the northern point of the island you get an expansive view that few Baja paddlers ever have the opportunity to see. Expect to paddle about 5 hours a day, with a long lunch break and floating respites. You’ll have ample opportunities after kayaking to snorkel, hike, swim or simply relax. Each evening finds us in a beautiful campsite enjoying fresh cooked Mexican cuisine and a round of margaritas.
