Highlights

The Very Best of Cinque Terre

Discover the very best that Cinque Terre has to offer. Kayak one of the most magically beautiful stretches of coastline anywhere in the world and hike the famous trail system that crisscrosses Cinque Terre. Arrive in the iconic five villages by kayak and walk ancient pathways that wind through vineyards and orchards perched on terraces defined by dry stone walls the total length of which has been estimated to equal or exceed that of Great Wall of China.

A Unique Meeting of Land and Sea

To explore this area by kayak is to experience the life of the sea that is at the heart and soul of this special place. Warm water, sun drenched beaches, great food, and the harmony of life at the sea’s edge has attracted artists, poets, and writers for well over two centuries. Paddling the steep coastline includes us in the small boat culture so central to Cinque Terre and while hiking select portions of the nation park trail system sweeping vista unfold around every turn as we journey from village to village.

Culture and Cuisine of Cinque Terre

Kayaking Cinque Terre lets us observe both the subtle details and the grand vistas of this unique place and at a pace that also allows us the time to immerse ourselves in the culture. With a focus on locally sourced Mediterranean cuisine, this trip is really a feast for the senses. We take time to enjoy crisp, warm, freshly baked focaccia scented with rosemary, a glass of chilled local white wine, and the very best reward at the end of a paddling day – a frosted cup of gelato!

Incomparable Cinque Terre

To kayak the coast of the five villages in the Cinque Terre is to step back in time – tiny medieval villages tucked into ravines of this steep coastline thatched with vineyards, where each of the Cinque Terre has a distinct dialect and atmosphere. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll also visit the sixth “Terre” – Portovenere that dates back to Roman times.

Slow Life Down

Clear warm water invites us to swim at nearly every stop and each afternoon finds us in a beautiful town with winding streets to wander and make discoveries, while every evening we go out to an intimate local restaurant to sample the best food the area has to offer. This summer – take time to slow life down to the pace of a paddle stroke and a hiker’s stride to experience the beauty and culture of Italy from a truly unique perspective.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Genoa

Your guides will meet the group at 5:30 PM in the lobby of our boutique hotel in Genoa’s Port Anticio historical district. We will enjoy the Italian tradition of aperitivo (wine and a light snack) while receiving an orientation on trip details. Once completed, we’ll walk through the narrow lane ways of the fascinating Porto Antico that date back well over 1000 years. Our destination is a local restaurant specializing in Genovese cuisine for the first of a series of memorable meals on this trip.
Overnight: Best Western Porto Antico
Meals: Dinner
Day 2

Transfer to Cinque Terre Monterosso, Vernaza and Corniglia

Transfer to Cinque Terre Monterosso, Vernaza and Corniglia
Boarding our van, we will drive along the Italian Riviera through beautiful beach towns and past pastel colored villas all the while enjoying enticing glimpses of Mediterranean blue waters of the Gulf of Genoa. Arriving at our launch point at Monterosso, the first village of the Cinque Terre (Five Lands), we’ll have a brief but comprehensive introduction to the kayaks before setting off. Loading our kayaks with items needed for the day’s paddling (luggage will be transferred to the hotel by van), we’ll begin paddling the coast of Cinque Terre National Park. As we glide through warm blue water, the panorama of Cinque Terre unfolds before us – steep cliffs topped with vineyards along which the towns are set a few kilometers apart. Our first stop is the picturesque village of Vernazza. After landing on the beach in the town’s small harbor, we’ll explore narrow alleyways and climb into the vineyards for a view that captures the iconic scenery of Cinque Terre. After lunch, we’ll re-board the kayaks for the paddle to Corniglia. As we skirt the shoreline, Corniglia reveals itself like a castle atop cliffs overlooking the sea. After landing and perhaps a refreshing swim, we’ll make the short climb up ancient stairs into the village proper where numerous winding paths lead to expansive views in all directions. This evening we’ll take in the sunset while sampling local wine and dining on the terrace of our hotel.
Overnight: Hotel Cecio Corniglia
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3

Cinque Terre: Manarola and Riomaggiore

After breakfast and espresso, we’ll descend to our waiting kayaks and continue our exploration of Cinque Terre. Passing through Manarola’s waterfront, we’ll paddle alongside the famous Via dell’Amore (the Road of Love) before landing at Riomaggiore. We’ll explore this scenic pair of towns before paddling along the dramatically steep stretch of coast beyond Riomaggiore and stopping for a swim before we return to Corniglia.
Overnight: Hotel Cecio Corniglia
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4

Cinque Terre: Hiking Corniglia to Manorola via Volastra

After breakfast we’ll set off on one of the best hikes in Cinque Terre National Park, the ruggedly beautiful trails 6d - 7a. Leaving from Corniglia through vineyards framed by some of best preserved dry stone walls in the park, the trail climbs to the village of Volastra before descending to Manarola. We’ll enjoy three leisurely hours hiking, taking frequent breaks to enjoy the sweeping views of the coast, then travel back to Corniglia by train with time to relax and have a swim before dinner.
Overnight: Hotel Cecio Corniglia
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5

Portovenere

This morning we’ll load our gear into the vans for the transfer along the scenic upper road to Portovenere which is considered the “sixth village” of Cinque Terre and on the New York Times’ list of “The 45 Places to Go in 2012”.
After lunch, we’ll launch our kayaks and paddle around Isola Palmaria, then explore the Rose Cliff along the coast from the town, keeping our eyes open for the entrances to hidden sea caves. On returning, we’ll paddle around a dramatic point topped by an 11th century church that is built on the much older site of a Roman temple and enter the picture perfect harbor of Portovenere. After landing at our beachfront hotel, we’ll have time to explore the town and castle before dinner at a local seafood restaurant.
Overnight: Hotel Le Terrazze, Portovenere
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6

Hiking the Tramonti

With a short drive up to the village of Fossola, we’ll start an unforgettable day of hiking through the breathtakingly wild area of Tramonti. At the southern end of Cinque Terre National Park, the trails of Tramonti are off the beaten track with a feeling of stepping back in time. Along with sweeping views of the coastline paddled just the day before, we’ll savor this remote part of Cinque Terre, stopping for fresh baked focaccia and other refreshments. Our route winds along terraces and cliff tops adorned with wildflowers and though the tiny villages of Monesteroli, Campiglia, Schiara and Muzzerone before dropping back to Portovenere. We’ll have time for a swim at our beachfront hotel before meeting for our final Cinque Terre dinner.
Overnight: Hotel Le Terrazze, Portovenere

Day 7

Portovenere and La Spezia

After a relaxed breakfast on the hotel’s terrace, we’ll transfer to La Spezia Centrale railway station. Your guides will ensure that you make the right connection to the next part of your Italian journey. Arrivederci!
