Trip Itinerary
Tuscany Kayaking Adventure
Arrival Rome - Grosseto
We begin our trip in the town of Grosseto, which is easily accessible in roughly two hours by train from Roma Termini station. Grosseto is a historic Tuscan city whose origins date back to the Etruscans. It gained prominence in the Middle Ages when it became the capital of the Maremma region. The city's main attraction is its remarkable 16th-century Medici walls, which you can walk along for panoramic views, along with its charming historic center featuring the Duomo di San Lorenzo and an archaeological museum.

Grosseto - Isola del Giglio
Your guides will meet you outside the central Grosseto train station at 8:30 am, Porto Santo Stefano, where we board the ferry for a 1-hour trip to Isola del Giglio. Arriving in Giglio Porto, we check in to our waterfront hotel near Torre del Saraceno, one of three towers on Giglio built to defend against Barbary pirates. A short drive takes us to a launch point at Cala Arenella, a beautiful beach on the eastern coast of Giglio. Nestled between a distinctive turtle-shaped rock formation and an ancient Roman granite quarry, the beach features thick, golden granite sand and emerald-to-deep-blue waters with seabeds alternating between sand and rock, making it particularly good for snorkeling. Our first paddle will take us along the northeast coast of the island.

Isola del Giglio - Porto Arturo to Punta di Capel Rosso
Today, we paddle the particularly dramatic stretch of coastline from the golden sand beach at Spaggia delle Cannelle to Punta di Capel Rosso at the island's southernmost tip. Later in the day, we explore the narrow alleyways of the walled hilltop town of Giglio Castello before dinner and a spectacular sunset view.

Isola del Giglio - Giglio Campese - Cala dell'Allume
A 20-minute drive takes us across the island to the beach town of Giglio Campese, our launch point for paddling the wilder west coast of the island. This coast features sea caves and the secluded beach of Cala dell'Allume, all set against the crystal-clear, turquoise-blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Isola del Giglio to Isola d'Elba
In the morning, we board the ferry to Porto Santo Stephano and drive through the rolling green hills dotted with olive groves, vineyards, and orchards of the "Silver Coast" of the Maremma countryside in southern Tuscany. After a one-hour ferry trip from the Port of Piombino, we arrive at the ancient town of Portoferraio on Isola d'Elba. Portoferraio was where Napoleon lived during his exile on the island of Elba. This evening, we'll enjoy a sunset dinner in the charming hilltop medieval village of Capoliveri, which offers sweeping views of some of the paddling in the days to come.
