BAJA GRAY WHALE WATCHING
DAY EXCURSION

Every year virtually the entire population of Grey whales make the long journey from the Bering Strait to the lagoons of Baja’s west coast. From late January through early March they come to mate and bear their young in these protected waters. The lagoons are formed by barrier islands and constitute a distinct environment of sand dunes fringed with mangroves. Grey whales were hunted to close to extinction in the last century and the healthy rebound of their population is one of the great ecological success stories.

Our one-day excursion to Magdalena Bay is devoted to whale-watching from 22 foot skiffs in a remote part bay accessible only by boat. In these deeper waters the whales exhibit a fascinating range of behaviors that include breaching, spy-hopping and fluking. On occasion “Friendlies” will nudge and lay along side the skiff for a very close-up look at and a chance to touch one of these gentle behemoths.

A visit to Magdalena Bay and the desert whales of Baja is a great complement to a paddling trip in the Sea of Cortez. All our skiffs are operated by government certified guides and all our whale watching activity is conducted in a manor that minimizes impact on whales during this critical time of the year.

Our excursion includes van transportation from Loreto, 2 hours of whale-watching, lunch, snacks and naturalist guide. You'll bring home lifelong memories.
